About healthcare in Austria

Austria's healthcare system is well-regarded, funded through federal tax revenues, and offers comprehensive coverage through both public and private schemes. The Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection oversees these systems, ensuring that all legal residents receive care, mostly at no or minimal cost.

Austria's public system is universal, covering healthcare, accidents, and pensions, while private insurance enhances access to quicker care, choice of specialists, and better amenities for elective procedures. Pharmacies in Austria, marked by a large red 'A', operate with some open 24/7, and medications are highly controlled, with some over-the-counter in other countries requiring prescriptions here. Public insurance usually covers medications at a nominal fee.
