Mauritius

Why Mauritius?

Located off Africa's southeastern coast, Mauritius is a great place to consider moving to as an expat. Its tropical climate, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture bring much appeal to Westerners. The cost of living in Mauritius is very reasonable compared to many countries, making it a great budget-friendly option.  An ethnically diverse population, with immigrants from Europe, Africa, India and China, ensures a rich melting pot from capital Port Louis to beach town Flic-en-Flac.

While it's considered the most queer-friendly country in Africa, Mauritius still discriminates against gay men and transgender people. Its French Creole can be challenging for newcomers to pick up, so expect communication to have challenges beyond the tourist areas. Overall, Mauritius' affordable cost of living and welcoming citizens makes the island life accessible for digital nomads, retirees, and young families.
