Europe is the top choice for Americans who want to leave the United States. Sixty-four percent of people who take the Expatsi Test say they’re considering Northern, Western, and Southern Europe, which includes popular choices like Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Ireland, and Switzerland.

In 2022, 76,221 Americans moved to the European Union. The largest group, 12,220, moved to France. Still, many Americans who want to move to Europe are concerned about being able to afford some of the pricier destinations and are worried about finding a job. Most countries in Europe don’t offer a digital nomad visa for Americans working remotely, so you’re only able to stay 90 days at a stretch in the E.U.

That may be why 2.3 million people on TikTok have watched this video featuring a less-popular country that’s actively hiring Americans in many job roles, including engineers, accountants, servers, retail workers, chefs, and more.

The country, Austria, is also one of the least susceptible to climate change and is home to Vienna, the EIU’s 2023 most livable city. Austria is ranked in the top 10% of countries for healthcare, safety, and infrastructure, and the cost of living in Vienna is comparable to Des Moines, Iowa.

Commenters noted that the country can be less welcoming for people of color, and a follow-up video explores that and corrects the fact that cannabis is legalized (rather than decriminalized).

Austria has launched a site where you can search for jobs and apply for residency. See if you should move to Austria by taking the Expatsi test.
