In the South, Non-Union Workers Are Watching UAW

According to NPR reporter Stephan Bisaha, most foreign carmakers operate their American plants in the Southern U.S., where they can run lean operations with little back stock. That’s because Southern workers aren’t unionized like their peers at Northern factories.


Nonetheless, those workers have their eyes on the UAW strike as it spreads to 38 locations in 20 states. Even though these non-union workers aren’t part of the work stoppage, plants try to stay competitive, and concessions gained by the UAW can still help them locally.

According to Bisaha, the primary benefits Southern workers stand to gain are increased pay and job training to help them transition to building electric vehicles. Listen to the full story for more.
